What Amaka Igwe told me

When writer, producer and director Amaka Igwe got her radio licence, I was one of the first friends in the media she invited to come on board. “Kunle, I know your hands are full, but being a consummate mass communication guy, it would be nice for you to join us at Top Radio and do a weekly programme on society and lifestyle. You can even call it ‘Hamiltonstyle’ like the weekly column you already write.
Amaka was big, not just in sheer size but in bold ideas, great vision and unrelenting energy to create. She is so deserving of the 2015 AMVCA Industry Merit Award given to her by DStv addicts and DStv owners, Multichoice. It capped her lifetime and devotion to Nollywood.
Apart from our chit-chats on the telephone, late Amaka, displayed an uncanny eye for details as a judge of media talent, alongside myself, Dr. Reuben Abati, Dr. Doyin Abiola and Prof. Oguntona. They judged entries to the Peak Nutrition Media Competition created and sponsored by FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc.
Born Amaka Isaac-Ene, she was an accomplished writer, producer, director, entrepreneur and teacher. She founded the BoB TV Expo, and was the CEO, Top Radio 90.9 FM, Amaka Igwe Studios, and Q Entertainment Networks, the first Nigerian drama series channel in 2014.
She stamped her creativity on Nollywood and the Nigerian TV and radio sectors before she passed in April 2014. Some of her popular productions include Rattle Snake, Violated, Checkmate and Fuji House of Commotion.
She organized the annual Best of the Best in African Film and Television Programmes Expo, BoBTV Expo, a forum for idea exchange, policy evaluation and business connections. A graduate of both the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and the University of Ibadan.
With 2015 as the Year of the Better Me (wise crack, MTN) and now that HAMILTONSTYLE is reborn and re-launched, radio here I come. TV will have to wait till I lose weight and develop a six-pack. Lol. Thank you, Amaka, for coming this way and making a mark.
